Yokohama-Atg: birthday witness with Alliance celebrating 70 years

Focused on corporate and production policies aimed at safeguarding environmental sustainability and promoting gender equality, the recently completed Yokohama-Atg plant in Vizag, India, also proved an ideal setting to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Alliance brand

Having become part of Yokohama in 2016 through the acquisition of Alliance Tire Group by the Japanese multinational, the Alliance brand is celebrating its 70th year of operation in 2024—a prestigious milestone. Yokohama-ATG, the manufacturing entity born from that very acquisition, chose to mark the occasion with the completion of its plant in Vizag, India—one of the most modern and advanced facilities in the industry, with sustainability and gender equality at the heart of its operations.

The company’s targets for 2050: net-zero carbon emissions

At this latest addition to the Group’s global manufacturing network, industrial practices are implemented to minimize the environmental impact of production cycles. These include reducing coal consumption by about one-third, using reclaimed rubber, bio-based oils, and silica derived from rice husk ash. All these initiatives aim to reach the company’s targets for 2050: net-zero carbon emissions and the exclusive use of sustainable raw materials in production.

New plant in Vizag

Also contributing to ecosystem protection is the “Forever Forest” initiative. For every employee and visitor at a Yokohama-ATG factory—including the Vizag plant—a tree is planted, helping create a forest around each production site. To date, over 250,000 trees have already been planted around the Group’s global facilities, absorbing around 8,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually. The long-term goal is to plant 1.3 million trees by 2030, compensating for 30% of Yokohama-ATG’s emissions compared to 2013 levels.

This virtuous path aligns with the company’s commitment to gender equality and female empowerment. Today, 40% of the workforce at the Vizag facility consists of women—a percentage expected to reach 50% by the end of this year.

The 70th anniversary of the Alliance brand

In addition to celebrating its 70th anniversary, the Alliance brand has also marked the milestone of one million AgriStar II tires sold. This tire series is primarily designed for machines intended for both field and road use. In the field, soil compaction is mitigated by the ability to deflate the tires down to a 65-bar rating, allowing for maximum ground contact area and optimal traction at low ground pressure.

On the road, performance is enhanced by SLT—Stratified Layer Technology—which essentially gives the tire a “second life” once 40% of the tread is worn. The special lug design alters its geometry as it wears, maintaining field traction while enhancing on-road comfort and minimizing energy consumption in transit.
