Top Ten 2023 tractors: the definitive rankings

NEW HOLLAND T5.120

In this article, we present the Top Ten 2023 rankings along with detailed commentary based on national market trends. It is worth noting that approximately 80 percent of the hundred tractors listed are the same models, albeit updated in features and possibly with revised names, that have dominated the Top Ten for years. This indicates a non-explicit traditionalism permeating the sector, contributing to the slow adoption of technical innovations provided by manufacturers.

Market Leader 2023: New Holland “T5.120”

New Holland
“T5.120” claimed the top spot, having ranked tenth in 2021 and second in 2022. This continuous growth confirms the validity of New Holland’s design, which allowed the company to place three of its machines in the most coveted Top Ten. However, the surprise entry is the Indian compact Solis “26,” praised for its balance of performance, quality, and price. The 2023 rankings also see the return of Fendt “Vario 211 F” and John Deere “6120 M,” with new entries from Same “Frutteto 080,” Deutz-Fahr “5105 Df,” and Antonio Carraro “Tigre 3200.”

CLASS A COMPACT TRACTORS

Previously dominated by Italian brands, the market for compact tractors under 60 horsepower has been transformed by the influx of Asian, Chinese, Indian, and Korean machines. Of the 935 registrations for the top ten compact tractors in Italy, 719, or nearly 77 percent, are Asian, including Japanese Kubota tractors. Italian brands are struggling due to the unbeatable price/performance ratios of Asian tractors, which are not low quality and are sometimes sold by national manufacturers under different names. As Asian brands improve their distribution, their market share is expected to grow, potentially expanding into higher categories as evidenced by Kubota’s presence in classes “B” and “C.”

CLASS B UTILITY TRACTORS

Utility tractors, with power between 60 and 110 horsepower and a weight not exceeding 2.5 tons, are known for their agility, dynamism, and versatility. This class saw one of the few registration increases compared to 2022, with nearly seventy more units, mostly attributed to New Holland, which placed five models in the top ten, including the top two positions. Eight out of ten models were also present in the 2022 rankings, indicating strong market loyalty. The only new entry is a John Deere tractor in seventh place, alongside Kubota, indicating a shift in leadership among manufacturers.

CLASS C ENTERPRISE TRACTORS

Registrations fell from 1,321 to 1,178, a roughly 12 percent decrease, reflecting the overall market trend and the preference for foreign brands over national ones for tractors over 120 horsepower. Nine out of ten models are foreign, with New Holland maintaining the lead. Of the two new entries, only the Valtra “A 105” introduces a previously unlisted brand, albeit not a surprise as it ranked eleventh last year.

CLASS D MULTIPURPOSE TRACTORS

Tractors in this class, with power between 110 and 180 horsepower and an empty weight between 2.3 and 2.8 tons, along with class “C” and specialized tractors, represent significant market volumes and interesting margins. However, from class “D” onwards, national brands are less favored. Apart from a few New Holland models, foreign brands like Deutz-Fahr, John Deere, and Fendt dominate, with Valtra’s “N” and “G” models also making significant inroads. John Deere’s “6120 M” has led this class for years, covering over 21 percent of the category with 217 units.

CLASS E MEDIUM AND HIGH POWER TRACTORS

This category, while considered medium performance in Europe, represents top-tier machines for many Italian companies. John Deere almost monopolizes the top spots with its “6100” and “6R” series. The competitive nature of this segment is evident with five brands each having one model in the top ten. Only two models are new entries, Valtra “T 175” and Deutz-Fahr “6230.”

CLASS F HIGH POWER TRACTORS

In class “F,” eight out of ten tractors have been in the rankings for years, with the top three unchanged from 2022. This consistency shows that companies prefer reliable and proven machines before investing significant sums. John Deere and Fendt are the most favored brands, with New Holland’s “T7” and Case IH’s “Puma” models also doing well. Deutz-Fahr’s “8280” debuts in this category, though overall volumes have decreased, with 527 registrations in 2022 dropping to 447 in 2023.

CLASS G SUPER TRACTORS

Super tractors, with power over 300 horsepower, a peak performance mark surpassed in recent years, suggest the need for updated classes. This class includes semi-tracked and tracked models, which have different volume dynamics. The top three positions remain unchanged with two Fendt and one New Holland, while Claas “Axion 870” rises from eighth to fourth place. John Deere’s presence has increased compared to 2022, though overall volumes declined from 244 in 2022 to 218 in 2023.

SPECIALTY TRACTORS

This class is dominated by national brands, but foreign brands are gaining ground. New Holland and Landini lead the market, closely followed by Fendt. Deutz-Fahr “5105 Df” is another notable model, though technically a Same tractor. Class registrations have significantly decreased, from 2,054 in 2022 to 1,650 in 2023, reflecting the national market trend.

ISODIAMETRIC TRACTORS

A near-monopoly class with nine out of ten positions held by Antonio Carraro. However, this year a Ferrari “Thor 085” challenges Carraro’s dominance, moving to seventh place, potentially rising if combined with Bcs and Pasquali volumes. Antonio Carraro also features in the overall rankings with two models, confirming its market appreciation. Isodiametric tractor registrations have also declined, from 2,603 in 2022 to 2,320 in 2023.

TRACKED TRACTORS

Tracked tractors saw a sharp decline in volumes, from 1,337 in 2021 to 972 in 2022 and just 671 in 2023. This trend is also reflected in class registrations, falling from 688 units in 2022 to 401 in 2023. This type of tractor seems to be confined to specific uses, becoming niche products. Landini remains the leader, followed by New Holland. Other brands, including Lamborghini, have exited the rankings.
