Jcb 403E: different climates, same comfort

Jcb is also aiming to expand its presence in the fully electric compact wheel loader segment with the launch of the “403E”, a 2.6 ton operating weight machine powered by a propulsion system with two independent electric motors with 33 and 20 kilowatts of peak power.

JCB Aims for a Leading Role in the Full-Electric Compact Wheel Loader Segment. Company is set to take a prominent position in the full-electric compact wheel loader market, specifically designed to meet the needs of the agricultural sector. This ambition is evident in the launch of the “403E,” a zero-emission compact loader featuring an enclosed cab and an operational weight of 2.6 tons. It is powered by a dedicated 33.5-kilowatt (approximately 46-horsepower) electric traction motor, complemented by a second 20-kilowatt (27-horsepower) electric motor to drive the working hydraulics. With a pallet fork tipping load of 972 kg, the fully electric “403E” boasts high power density, ensuring performance on par with its conventionally powered counterpart, the JCB 403.

Powerful Performance

This is made possible by next-generation lithium-ion batteries with a 20 kWh capacity, allowing the machine to operate continuously for four to five hours in mixed-duty cycles. Notably, the inclusion of a heated front and rear windshield, a heated seat, and a three-speed fan with a 2.2-kilowatt heater has minimal impact on battery life. The heating system includes three temperature settings and a “booster boost” function that rapidly increases the cabin temperature for 10 minutes before shutting off to conserve energy. Additionally, the heater automatically deactivates if the cabin doors are open to preserve battery charge. In warmer months, the fan can circulate air independently of the door position.

The battery system is optimized for maximum efficiency. Once depleted, the batteries can be recharged via an integrated charger compatible with different power sources. When connected to a standard 230V domestic outlet, a full charge takes approximately eight hours, while high-voltage DC fast chargers reduce this to just two hours.

Three Operating Modes

Regardless of the charging method, the batteries supply energy to the powertrain through three distinct operating modes:

  • Hare Mode: Delivers maximum performance with a top speed of 20 km/h.
  • Tortoise Mode: Limits speed to 8 km/h, extending battery life without compromising lifting performance.
  • Snail Mode: Further reduces travel speed to 5 km/h, with 0.5 km/h adjustment increments via a rotary controller, allowing for precise maneuvering.

Additionally, the hydraulic system offers two selectable modes via a dedicated controller—one prioritizing dynamic response, while the other enhances precision during load handling.
