Gowan, prevention of pathogens in dna

Zoxamide and benalaxil-m are the active substances at the base of Gowan’s anti-downy mildew range. Both used as a preventative measure, they block the path of the pathogen

The protection of vines from downy mildew covers a period of several months, starting from the phase in which the shoots are elongating and ending close to harvest. For these reasons it is necessary to structure rational defense programs, alternating fungicides composed of active substances that show different mechanisms of action on the pathogen and equally different behaviors on and in the treated plant tissues, i.e. by contact or cytotropic/translaminar or systemic.

In this sense Gowan has structured a wide range of solutions that meet precisely the requirements set out above, allowing the crop to be protected in the best possible way from the beginning to the end of its production cycle. Two are the cornerstones of the portfolio of the Italian-American company, i.e. zoxamide and belalaxyl-m, both owned by Gowan.

The first active substance is available both alone and in different two- or three-way mixtures with different partners capable of achieving effective technical synergies. As a confirmation, “Zoxium 240 Sc” is formulated as a concentrated suspension based on zoxamide and is excellent for the composition of extemporaneous mixtures with other anti-downy mildew products with different mechanisms of action. “Electis R Flow” and “Reboot” are two-way products containing zoxamide and tribasic copper sulphate, the first, and zoxamide and cymoxanil the second. Formulated in water-dispersible granules, “Electis Trio Wdg” offers the triple protection of a mixture that in addition to zoxamide also includes cymoxanil and fosetyl aluminum, the first being markedly cytotropic, the second being excellent systemic. For these reasons “Electis Trio Wdg” appears ideal especially in the phases of highest susceptibility of the crop to the disease, such as for example around flowering.

Furthermore, the applications of zoxamide-based products in this phase allow you to count on its appreciable collateral action on botrytis. To further expand the range of solutions proposed by Gowan, two different combi-packs also arrive. The first, “Zoxium F Pack”, is composed of a commercial combi-pack based on zoxamide and folpet. The latter active substance offers a strong multi-site action by contact, playing a fundamental role also in terms of anti-resistance strategies. The second is a twin-pack and instead bears the name of “Zoxium Pro Pack” and combines zoxamide with potassium phosphonate with systemic action. As mentioned, however, Gowan’s anti-downy mildew range can also count on the effectiveness of a product based on benalaxil-m, namely “Fantic F Nc Wg”, which also contains folpet.

To the preventive efficacy by contact of the latter, benalaxil-m combines a locosystemic behavior that allows its diffusion inside the leaf blade, thus extending the preventive anti-downy mildew protection. The three permitted annual applications of “Fantic F Nc Wg” range from the occurrence of the first favorable conditions for the pathogen, in the early stages of vegetative development in pre-flowering, then covering the post-flowering stages and, finally, the “peppercorn” stage.
