The meeting between Minister Lollobrigida and the President of FederUnacoma, Mariateresa Maschio on board the Amerigo Vespucci ship, on the occasion of the Brindisi stage of the Vespucci Mediterranean Tour, marks the beginning of the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the association

Over the next seven years, the population of North African and Middle Eastern regions is expected to grow steadily, reaching 520 million people by 2032. The agricultural economies of the Mediterranean basin, which already prioritize food security, will therefore need to meet increasing food demand. They will have to do so by increasing crop yields, cultivating new lands and restoring degraded ones, tackling climate change, and optimizing water usage. The only viable response to these challenges lies in agricultural mechanization—and it must be a highly technological one.

This was one of the key topics discussed during the event held yesterday (April 14) aboard the historic ship Amerigo Vespucci, docked at the port of Brindisi as part of the sixth stop of the Vespucci Mediterranean Tour – Villaggio IN Italia.

“Italian agricultural machinery can play a fundamental role in developing the agricultural economies of the Mediterranean basin by increasing productivity, improving production quality, and optimizing the use of production inputs,” said Mariateresa Maschio, president of FederUnacoma. “To make this possible, it is essential that our companies have adequate resources to invest in research,” she added, “and in the development of solutions specifically designed for the countries in this region.”

However, the current economic situation—marked by a decline in the domestic market and turbulence in international ones—risks hampering the ability of Italian agromechanical industries to innovate.
